The Kurrajongs

Who were the Kurrajongs?

These men were participants in the state wide 'snowball' recruiting marches which began in October 1915 to encourage men to enlist for war service.

In all ten recruiting marches took place from different parts of NSW, including the Kurrajongs who started from Inverell in 1916.  At the time they were the largest group of recruits to leave a country town together for service during World War I.  Most of these men served with the 33rd Battalion in Belgium and France, with a large number killed in action or gassed.

The book 'A fine body of men - Inverell Remembers the Kurrajongs 1916' was compiled from privately held material, diaries, letters and newspapers accounts. Containing 100 images, the book provides an excellent insight into the conditions the men encountered during the war.
